The One Lesson That Changed My Life
The short versionIf you build a habit of believing that giving up is an option, you've failed before you even started.
Here's a story about the one lesson that changed my life.
The Night Everything Changed
When I moved to America in 6th grade, I couldn't speak a word of English.
One day in school, I got a reading assignment — and I just skipped it.
In my mind, it was literally impossible.
My mom used to check my homework every night, but for some reason I thought she'd let this one slide.
Nope.
At 9pm, she sits me down at the kitchen table, hands me my English–Korean dictionary, and says:
"We're not going to bed until you finish."
I'm thinking, "How is she being this unreasonable?"
And me being me… I rebel.
"Alright Mom… let's see who gives up first."
The Battle Begins
10pm… 11pm… midnight.
I sit there with my arms crossed, fully committed to proving her wrong.
Then 1am hit — the latest I had ever stayed up in my life.
Surely she'd give up now, right?
Wrong.
At 2am, I'm dozing off. She looks at me and says:
"Go wash your face so you can stay awake."
At this moment I realize:
She's not backing down.
And the only way out… is through.
The Breakthrough
I pick up the dictionary and look up every word.
Piece by piece, the questions start making sense.
They're simple questions like:
"What city was John born in?"
Then I search for words like "city" or "John" or "born" in the reading material, and the answers are pretty easy to find.
Before I know it, I'm done. And it only took 30 minutes!
Hours of stubbornness… for something I could've knocked out in half an hour.
The Lesson I Still Live By
I was angry at my mom for keeping me up that night.
Sometimes I wonder… would I have done the same for my kid?
Would I have given up sleep for a meaningless homework assignment?
But I'm grateful to her because she understood it wasn't meaningless.
If I build a habit of believing that giving up is an option, I've failed before I even started.
That mindset stuck with me.
- I cranked out an entire essay the night before it was due
- I finished a client presentation minutes before the meeting
- I launched a website the day before the deadline for a Black Friday sale
- I made payroll in two days when we had no money in the bank
- I created a post in 30 minutes when I had no content ideas
Not succeeding was never even an option for me.
Without that mindset, I honestly wouldn't be where I am today.
Which Brings Me To You
What goals are you trying to hit right now?
Imagine someone pointed a gun to your head and said not succeeding isn't an option.
You'd probably figure out a way, right?
Now, I'm not saying you should live your whole life like that.
Sometimes quitting or pivoting is the smart move.
But I am saying this:
If you tell yourself it's impossible, you've already failed before you even begin.
So don't give up that easily.
You're more capable than you think.
