How to say the thing nobody is saying?

Short answerSay the thing everyone is afraid to say, because almost every time you do, people find out everyone else was thinking it too.

Why Nobody Says It

  • People stay quiet because they don't want to look stupid.
  • Everyone nods like they get it, but almost nobody actually got it.

How to Say It

  • Ask the selfish question, the thing you genuinely need to know for yourself.
  • Almost every time you say it, you find out everyone else was thinking it too.
  • Follow your point with "for example" so people actually get what you mean.

That pattern taught me something: just because you said it does not mean they got it. Assume they only understood ten percent. That is why I started ending every explanation with "for example" and giving a concrete example. Every single time I did that, people would go, "Oh, now I get it." That is where my whole "I never thought of it that way" thing really started.
