How do I make my story easy to read?
Short answerWrite at a 7th-grade level or below and read your story out loud to catch every place it gets stuck.
Check the Reading Level
- Paste your story into Hemingway App (hemingwayapp.com) to see the grade level.
- Aim for grade 7 or below because that's what the average American reads at.
- Rewrite every sentence in its simplest form, like a child can understand it.
Read It Out Loud
- Read the whole thing out loud, not in your head, and find where it gets stuck.
- Wherever you get stuck, rewrite that part so it flows smooth.
- Even better, have someone else read it out loud so you can hear the rough spots.
Make It Scannable
- Use short paragraphs and white space so it doesn't look like a wall of text.
- Mix short and long sentences to give your writing rhythm and momentum.
Try itPaste your story into hemingwayapp.com and rewrite any sentence above grade 7 in simpler words.
