How do I find the "one" lesson in my story?

Short answerWhen you start writing, you'll find many possible lessons. Your job is to drill down and pick just one to end on.

Why One Lesson

  • A story can have many lessons, but you have to consolidate it so there's only one at the end.
  • Think of it like a movie trailer: lots of little scenes, but they all build to one point.

How to Find It

  • Write your first draft and let the lessons come out naturally, then drill down to the one that matters most.
  • Rewrite the last few lines so they point to only one lesson.
  • If you already know the lesson you want to teach, reverse engineer the story to build toward it.
