So last night I was watching Back to the Future 3 on Netflix, and there’s this scene where Michael J. Fox throws a pan that says “Frisbie’s Pies” — like an actual frisbee.
That got me thinking… 🤔
Did Frisbee start as a pie company?
I had to Google it, of course. 😅
Turns out, it all started in 1937 when a guy named Walter Morrison was tossing a pie pan with his wife on the beach.
Someone saw them, offered 25 cents for it, and because the pan only cost 5 cents, he thought — “Wait, what? This could be a business!”
That’s not where the story ends though…
He improved the design, started selling it, and it went through a few names — Whirlo-Way, Flyin’ Saucers, and finally Pluto Platter.
Then a toy company called Wham-O bought it.
But here’s the twist: nobody was calling it “Pluto Platter.”
College kids were calling it “Frisbie,” because they used to toss around Frisbie’s Pie tins from their dining halls — just like Morrison and his wife did.
Wham-O noticed that and decided to roll with it — slightly changing the spelling.
And that’s how the name “Frisbee” was born.
So yeah… the name wasn’t invented by the company.
It was given to them by the people.
How I came up with my catchphrase
This story reminded me of how I came up with the line:
”I never thought of it that way”
Just like the name Frisbee, it wasn’t invented by me.
It was given to me by YOU.
Y’all just kept commenting it in my posts, and it stuck.
If you asked me 5 years ago what I wanted to be known for,
I probably would’ve said design, marketing, or personal branding.
Never in a million years did I think I’d be known for making people say,
“I never thought of it that way.”
The truth is, brand names, catchphrases, even products…
They’re rarely invented out of thin air.
They’re discovered by accident.
What do you want to be known for?
That was a trick question. 😉
It doesn’t really matter what you want to be known for.
What matters is what people want from you —
because that’s what you’ll end up being known for.
That’s your real superpower. 🦸♂️
But the only way to find out is to put yourself out there.
Share your stories.
A lot of them.
Because when you share who you really are,
the world tells you what they see in you.
And that’s how you discover your true brand.
