Theory vs. Practical Learning

You ever wonder why you need a coach or mentor if you can learn everything from a book or an online course? Here's an example of why you need a coach.

When I was in college, I had a friend who was terrible at talking to girls.

I always told him to just ask questions and let them talk because most people love to talk about themselves.

He said “I’m trying but it doesn’t work”

I remember one night, we were at a party talking to 2 girls and I instantly saw what he was doing wrong.

The next day I told him: “You’re asking them too many questions.”

He replied: “You said that’s what I’m supposed to do”

I giggled, and said: “Yeah, but you’re doing it wrong. It sounds like you’re interviewing them for a job. You’re bombarding them with question after question. Where do you work? Where are you from? What school did you go to? What do you like to do for fun?”

After that I started to watch him and give pointers on what he was doing wrong and how he can improve.

I told him to ask open-ended questions, ask follow up questions, stick to one topic they’re interested in, and to be genuinely interested in what they have to say.

And in just few short weeks he got himself a girlfriend.

There’s a huge difference between just learning something and actually applying what you learned in real life. That’s why having a coach who sees what you’re doing wrong and showing you hands-on can save you so much time.
